Who?

We are Trish and Pete and we are the Pathways Advisors for 2024.

What?

Our job is to work closely with you to support you as you navigate your school pathway and help you prepare for your post-school pathway.

Where?

Our office is located in the back corner of the Senior School Library. We hold our Pathway Interviews here.

How?

We have a website where you can access our newsletter and explore useful resources to help you explore your own pathways.

We also have a newsletter to keep you up-to-date with career and pathway opportunities. We will email you a link to this each fortnight.

We also host seminars, workshops, and expos throughout the year from universities, colleges, and industry specialists. These will be advertised in our newsletter and What’s On.

Year 11 and 12- The Year Ahead

Congratulations on your decision to study Year 11 and 12 at The Friends’ School. This is just one step to opening up opportunities for your future.


Over the year you may need to make some decisions which will vary dependent on whether you are in Year 11 or Year 12.


These might be:


  • Selecting subjects for Year 12, considering a

field of study, deciding which university to study at.

  • Creating a resume so you can apply for a job,

a scholarship or perhaps an application for a university

accommodation

  • Considering some work experience, an industry exposure program or a VET course
  • Starting your application to an overseas university.
  • Exploring opportunities for a GAP year post Year 12.


To help you build confidence Trish and Pete recommend you:


  • Read our fortnightly newsletter


  • Attend university and college seminars that we host throughout the year- these will be advertised in our newsletter


  • Speak to industry specialists in fields that interest you.


  • Attend Open Days, information sessions and our Careers Expo


  • Explore Scholarship opportunities (some of these are early in the year)


  • Share your ideas and talk with your family, friends, teachers and your tutor


  • Apply to the UTAS School Recommendation program


  • Visit Trish and Pete (Pathways Advisors) to talk about options post school

Year 10 - The Year Ahead

In the Year 10 Opportunity Block and at various times throughout the year, you will:


  • Learn more about your strengths.


  • Undertake the Morrisby assessment - this will provide you with ideas about possible pathways and subjects for Year 11 and 12.


  • Take part in a Mock Interviews


  • Attend TFS Careers Expo


  • Undertake a week of Work Experience of your choice.


  • Build your skills to apply for jobs


  • Explore opportunities that you might like to consider beyond Year 12.

Study Work Grow

All Friends students can sign up to Studyworkgrow using our school code: FRIENDS19.


This is an awesome site that provides lots of Career Education information for students including industry spotlights, a resume builder, and lots of stuff for now and for the future.

With our school subscription, students can access a weekly newsletter, ‘how to guides’, and lots of resources to support their pathway choices.


Marine Discovery Experience - UTAS

Interested in a hands on marine program?

Senior students across Australia are invited to kick-start their university journey with an immersive learning experience on picturesque Maria Island on the Tasmanian East Coast, led by field experts at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS).

A Practical Introduction to Temperate Marine Biology (XAS101) is designed to engage, challenge and inspire you through a hands-on marine science program.

Examine the impacts of climate change, invasive species, pollution, debris, and their associated social and economic impacts on a world-renowned marine ecosystem.

ANU - Key Dates

ANU provides students with the opportunity to apply directly to the University. Your application covers admission, scholarships and accommodation.


Key dates:

l1 March - Direct Entry applications open

16 March - Open Day

13 May - Application Deadline

2 September - Offers released


Scholarship opportunity: The Tuckwell Scholarship offers talented and motivated students the opportunity to realise their potential by providing financial support, personal enrichment and development opportunities.

This scholarship is awarded for three to five years of undergraduate study at ANU, and is valued between $76,000 - $136,000

Applications for this scholarship open 7 March 2024.


Expression of interest - AMC Careers Expo

AMC is holding an expo that explores over 35 major exhibitors from across Australia offering careers in Engineering, Government, Shipbuilding, Logistics, Seafaring, and Global Shipping. The visit includes a tour of AMC's unique learning facilities that cannot be found anywhere else in Australasia.


Pending interest, we have 20 places available for students in Years 11 and 12 for a day trip to the Newnham campus. This will be an all day excursion leaving at approx 7.15am.

University of Melbourne

University of Melbourne offer a Hansen Scholarship - This Scholarship is worth up to $108,000.00. Applications are now open for current Year 12 students who plan to begin their undergraduate degree at Melbourne in Semester 1, 2025. For more information please go to their website here


We recommend you apply early – before 3 March 2024 – to this opportunity as this enables you to receive feedback on your application and an opportunity to resubmit by the closing date of 3 April 2024.

Interested in Medicine/Dentistry?

For students who are interested in pursuing a medical or dentistry pathway, it pays to be organized.


There are few extra steps to applying for a degree in these fields and it is important you stay up to date.


All students interested in applying to medicine or dentistry are required to sit the UCAT. The deadline to apply for this year's testing is Wednesday 5 June 2024 at 11:59 pm AEST. more information about UCAT here).


There are a range of online resources that can assist you with your preparation for the UCAT. Please book a time with Trish or Pete to discuss your options here.


Tas Police Recruitment Info Session

If you’re considering policing as a career – come along to one of our Police Recruitment Info Sessions.


Serving officers will be in attendance to provide information and answer questions about the recruitment process, life at the Academy, and policing as a career. You will be encouraged to participate in a recruitment fitness test to gauge your level of fitness, and receive advice on using the current techniques to complete the test safely, in addition to advice on how to improve to give yourself the best chance to pass the test.
